Alan D. Blackmon

I chose to make Grand Rapids my place of residence in 2009 after graduating from Grand Valley State University with my Bachelors of Science in Legal Studies and Criminal Justice.  A friend of the family made me aware of the job opening with Grand Rapids Public Schools and I chose to apply for the position. The interview was the best one that I have had to date, I was certain that I had the job.

As a Youth Advocate, I work with at at-risk students, their families and other administrative and support personnel within the school to advocate for the rights of at-risk youth. Specifically, my job is to work with these individuals to help remove barriers that stand in the way of the academic success of the student. My duties range from providing guidance in student's decision-making process to assessing and implementing appropriate intervention plans.

This job was the kind of opportunity that I was waiting for. I have a passion for working with individuals to impact change in their lives. I am forever grateful to Grand Rapids Public Schools for allowing me this opportunity to further my professional growth.
