HERR GR: Debut

Friday, May 25, 9 PM $5, 21+, $10, 18+
In a city known for bold debuts, many arrive with golden parachutes to catch those who fall. But once in a while, a bold launch arrives with little fanfare, while still representing the same risks, causing even the most cynical to secretly hope for a win.

This in a nutshell explains my fears, but also my deepest hope for the ambitious launch of a new music event, HERR GR, in the city of Grand Rapids.

While a ladies night hip hop event focused also on attracting the LGBTQ community might not be your bag, it is a place where all should feel welcome. That is the point of this new monthly event to be hosted by current LA resident and former Grand Rapidian iRAWniQ, who has envisioned creating this event here for a long time.

“I have for too long watched friends of mine depart Grand Rapids as they travel to Detroit and as close as Kalamazoo to attend a similarly themed event,” says iRAWniQ from a phone call last week. “Having a ladies' hip hop dance event is nothing new in other markets, but it is here. So, why not, right?”

And she is right. Grand Rapids has no shortage of dance clubs or places where women and the LGBTQ community are actively courted for their patronage, but there is not a venue that has dedicated a night to the promotion and inclusion found in this culture.

And lest you think this is just about hip hop, no worries as iRAWinQ promises some pop music treats as well tossed from the 1s and 2s by the college party circuit DJ Miss C, who will be working the crowd into a sweat all night long.

HERR GR, while focused on the ladies, is welcoming to all and will be held on the last Friday of every month at Billy’s Lounge in Eastown.

“I am a part of the culture of this city and of another,” says iRAWniQ, “But I also am part of a diverse music culture too, and plan (with time) to bring in incredible names to this region through HERR GR. It is going to be about having a popping good time, so come on out.”
