Running of the Bulls: Run, Baby, Run

Saturday, August 11, 11 a.m.
It is a rare occasion when one can get in their workout while getting their drinking on at the very same time. Need proof? Just try cracking a Founders’ Kentucky Breakfast Stout while attending a spin class and see how far you will get with the staff.

But when the Grand Rapids Roller Girls’ fourth annual Running of the Bulls hits the streets of downtown, you can get big fun and big drink specials while getting fit.

Over the years, there have been changes to this much-beloved event, including the addition of a handheld, program-driven SCVNGR Hunt where players can use the mobile app to navigate one of two courses, solving challenges at the area bars participating in this three-hour event.

One thing that is a constant is that we will see our roller girls dressed up as bulls, racing down the sidewalks of our town as contestants dressed up as Spanish runners dodge the inflatable bats flailing through the air. The registration for the run begins at Founders Brewing Company at 11 a.m., before ending at Hopcat where the Best SCVNGR Hunt score, Best Runner (or Group) Costume, Best Bull Costume and other prizes will be handed out.

And while you will not be able to wander the streets of GR with an open container (yet) as you race from venue to venue, the thought of a cold one waiting for you at one of the many Arena District venues participating should get your feet moving really fast. You will hit that target heart rate when a roller girl with a giant bat chases you.
