Do It Like Beyonce: Fitness with healthy attitude

Saturday, July 18, 8 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. event
"I really love that the First Lady has not only made fighting obesity her mission, but that she has brought in Beyonce to help her get the message out there," says Johanna Jelks, founder of She Rides Her Own Way, as she answers my question, "What's Beyonce' have to do with it?"

Turns out that adding Bey's name does a lot of good.

"Right away we noticed that when we added her name to the event listing, our traffic shot up," says Jelks.

Do It Like Beyoncé is a first time fitness event hosted by She Rides Her Own Way, a popular bike culture and style-friendly group. It's happening on the banks of the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids' Ah-Nab-Awen Park. The day kicks off with a series of fitness offerings, including a chance to enjoy a slow-roll-style Saturday ride through the city (beginning at Ah-Nab-Awen Park) at 9 a.m.

Other activities happening on the banks of the Grand River include morning yoga, hula hooping, Zumba, and a culturally rich Bollywood dance session from Laura Armenta of the Armentality Movement Arts Center.

Immediately after lunch (and please pack one, as the meal is not provided), attendees will enjoy a mini-fitness-wear, mother-daughter Fashion Show presented by Dress Code 187 as well as a "Best Mother-Daughter Beyonce' & Blue Ivy" styled dance-off competition.

And if anyone can marry all this together in a fun-filled day then it would be Jelks, who was recently featured in Glamour Magazine for her efforts in launching She Rides Her Own Way.

Admission: $5 (suggested donation)
