Board Game Night: The Pleasures of Community Building

Sunday, Mar. 9, 5 - 9 p.m.
It's no secret to those who have traveled that as a city grows, so will the desire to find those spaces where play can commence freely. In cities both near and far, I've witnessed the way that people playing chess in a park setting creates community, and noticed that the simple application of chalk to a sidewalk can invite passerby to engage in a hop down memory lane (regardless of age) for a game of hopscotch.

But it is winter, so where do we go? On Sunday night The Pyramid Scheme, a venue known for their monthly free pinball championships, is welcoming the traveling event Board Game Night presented by the new downtown shop Vault of Midnight.

And no worries about the lack of knowledge of skill level, according to Vault of Midnight's manager and organizer for the event, Nick Yribar.

"We will be bringing easy to learn (but strategically deep) board games including titles like Hanabi, Kingdom Builder, Ingenious, and several others," says Yribar. "Our staff will be on hand to teach these board games to players of every skill level; no prior knowledge of these or any board games are necessary to drop by and have fun."

The venue, which has created an interesting culture around community-building activities like gaming but also music, fine art as well as the craft of programming, has one of the best jukeboxes in town so you know your night's soundtrack will be amazing.

"We're super excited to have The Pyramid Scheme hosting us for this month's board game night, as we've been bopping around town at places like Madcap Coffee and Grand Central Market to great crowds of awesome gamers," says Yribar. "The Pyramid Scheme is one of our favorite bars/venues in town, and thus we've been chomping at the bit to partner up with them since we opened."

The cross-pollination of venues is also great for all the businesses of the center city. If you like a game, I'm quite sure the folks Vault of Midnight would be more than happy to help connect you to one of their fine titles in stock at its downtown Monroe Center location.
