Brunch, Brews, and a Movie: Rainy Day Option?

Sunday, August 2, 11 a.m.
If the weather should turn rainy or your buddy's offer to head to the beach hit dry pavement (and not the dry sand as expected), thank goodness there is always something to do in the city.

Making sure your favorite activities of Sunday brunch, beer, and a movie are rolled up like a deluxe roll at your favorite sushi restaurant comes a can't-miss food and entertainment combo. You start your Sunday adventure with a stop at Grand Rapids Brewing Co. for brunch and brew before migrating with your fellow film fans up the street to a very special private screening of Taxi Driver at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts.

Hailed by critics for decades as one of the greatest films ever created, Taxi Driver is a 1976 American film about Travis Bickle, a Vietnam vet (Robert De Niro), who drives a taxicab on the hyper-realistic battle-like streets of 1970s' New York City. When Bickle encounters a child prostitute, played flawlessly by Jodie Foster, his vigilante switch gets flipped, setting in motion a series of corrective events that still has film critics and moviegoers discussing its meaning to this day. Is the taxi driver a modern from-the-street hero or a lunatic assassin?

The event is hosted this month by your Thriller! Chiller! emcee Shirley Griffin, who will share insights on the film selected. Thriller! Chiller! -- Michigan's international genre film festival celebrating action, horror, sci-fi & suspense movies – is taking a year off this fall. It operated on a shoestring budget since 2006 and helped shape the filmmaking community we are currently enjoying via the many films being created in our region.

A complete list of all the films coming this fall to the Brunch, Brews, and a Movie can be found on UICA's website.

Admission: $20

Local Fact: Taxi Driver was written by Paul Schrader, a Calvin College graduate, and will be in Grand Rapids as a part of UICA's Visiting Artists Series, September 3 & 4, 2015.
