Did you know that, while ArtPrize attracts a whole lot of people to downtown Grand Rapids, just beyond the center of the city is a world class garden and arts center that attracts nearly 600,000 visitors and members annually?
The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, a gift to our city and state from Fred and Lena Meijer of the Meijer Stores, is a place where living sculpture in the form of plants, trees and other wildlife freely mingles with the contemporary artworks along an impressive 139 acres.
Mum Day is actually a part of the Chrysanthemums and More! exhibition – the third for The Gardens. And if you are a green thumb garden person, then you know your options for what you can plant or add to the ground are thinning with each frost that covers our morning lawns. Mums represent one of the last chances to enjoy color before a sea of white covers our landscape until the spring.
And while there will be a host of colorful mums to marvel over as you tour this exhibition, you can even choose to participate in a class or two (free with your admission). Featured this day will be the following:
- More Than Mums: The Palette of Chrysanthemums & More
- Fall Floral Design and Chrysanthemum Spheres
- Chrysanthemum Companion Planting
There will even be tours led by The Garden's expert horticulture staff, which is always happy to answer your questions. Guests will be led through various locations to highlight the unique aspects of Chrysanthemums & More!
Chrysanthemums & More! is probably the last time this year you will be able to see The Gardens all dressed up in colors of orange, red and yellow with touches of green. But if the air chills, you can find warmth inside visiting (or revisiting) their ArtPrize entry in the gallery space.
Don't delay in seeing this show, because just like the fall colors, it's temporary and will be coming down after Jan. 4th, 2015.
Admission: Free with paid admission; Members Free
