Girls Double Header: Roller Girls and Girls Rock! Grand Rapids

Saturday, Feb. 21, 5 p.m. (Derby) and Sunday, Feb. 22, 2 - 5 p.m. (Rock)
In the years ahead, I predict Grand Rapids will not only watch women become a dominant force in the battle of the sexes (demographic division), but with a little push from these two groups, we are also sure to see a new wave of female all-stars emerge from the male-dominated pack.

For more than a decade the Grand Raggidy Roller Girls have been part of a new wave of roller derby more than 200 international teams strong. This weekend, they will be celebrating, and on Saturday will be partnering with the Experience Pink Project to help draw awareness to breast cancer prevention. They will engage in hard girl-on-girl sports action, welcoming for the very first time the Traverse City Toxic Cherries. There will be blood for sure, and it will be sweet.

The proceeds raised this evening will help pay for screenings, such as mammograms, for those who otherwise could not afford to get them. Additional fundraisers will also be held throughout the night.

Also hitting the rink this weekend will be the Girls Rock! Grand Rapids 2nd annual fundraiser event at the Kentwood Fun Spot, where families will be invited to don skates and boogie the afternoon away in support of another female-focused cause that hopes to crank out future rock stars from our region.

In addition to a disco-themed event will be live music from artists Leanne King Macdonald, Hollywood Makeout, Lady Ace Boogie, and The Lippies.

The funds raised at the roller rink event will help support the GR!GR summer camp activities, which include music workshops, instrument training, band-shirt screen-printing, and much more. For more information about Girls Rock! Grand Rapids visit www.girlsrockgr.org

Admission: Derby - $12 in advance or $15 at the door / Girls Rock - $6 ($3 of admission paid is contributed to Girls Rock! Grand Rapids.)
