9th Annual Taste of Soul Sunday: Place-Making's Heart, Head and Belly

Sunday, Feb. 16, 1 - 4:30 p.m.
There is something really great about celebrating our 9th annual Taste of Soul Sunday at Grand Rapids Public Library (GRPL).

Not only is this place known for holding a great selection of books truly committed to diversity, but this annual event is a chance to celebrate the African American residents of our community with a host of other community members as we enjoy an array of food samplings from local restaurants in addition to lectures by local authors, historians, and artists, music and children’s activities.

This year's musical performances will include Karisa Wilson, VIP (Very Important Praise), and Imani Singers of Grand Rapids.

In keeping with the historical aspects of our community that the library provides, author presentations will include talks by award-winning columnist Rochelle Riley, African American art expert George Bayard III, and genealogist Timothy Pinnick. There's even a very fresh and raw Afrocentric poetry slam hosted by Azizi Jasper and Gemini DaPoet.

"Over the years, Taste of Soul Sunday has brought together some of the most talented dancers, musicians, authors, historians and performers to explore African American heritage and culture in our community," says GRPL's Marketing and Communications Manager Kristen Krueger-Corrado. "The event fosters great conversation, interest in local businesses and restaurants, exploration of the library's collection, and community pride."

This event provides parents a chance to immerse their children and teens in a multicultural activity, including an Underground Railroad scavenger hunt and a craft activity.

Krueger-Corrado also adds that, over the years, the Taste of Soul has been so impactful that the Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation is raising funds to endow the program, ensuring its continuation for years to come. If you would love to make a contribution to ensure this cultural program attracting more than 1,500 guests each year as it continues to grow, please contact Krueger-Corrado.
