Run This Shit: Vinyl Takes Over Downtown

Thursday, Jan. 15, 9:30 p.m.
Music has the ability, due to the flattening of our world, to be everywhere all at once with a click of the mouse, but for those who are seeking a bit of a flashback to the days of vinyl, well, you are in luck Thursday night.

From Mike Saunders, the same guy who, with others in our area, has produced events from the Michigan Hip Hop Revue to the wildly popular Grand Rapids Soul Club, comes Run This Shit (RTS) – a new kind of party featuring a vinyl take over and debuting in the back room of downtown's Pyramid Scheme.

When they say vinyl rap all night long, they truly mean it, as everything spun at the RTS event will be from a pressed 12-inch hunk of polyvinyl chloride.

There is a ton of diversity in rap, but a lot of folks may not know how to tell the difference, according to Saunders, whose projects in the past have always sought to bring a layer of education to these music-filled events.

"We'll be playing old '80s boom rap, '90s New York golden era," says Saunders, who adds that this night will also showcase the fresh as well: "I'll be spinning a set of new stuff from Detroit as well as a set that celebrates the Bay Area scene."

Also on the 1s and 2s that night will be DJ Backteeth with his massive collection of rare records. And as part of an audience participation portion of the night, if you can name a track from his super rare set, you can win a copy of the Clear Soul Forces "Get No Better" 7" single.

As you can see, the music will be will be all over place, so be patient if you do not like a track because soon enough there will be something for you to dance or simply nod your head along to.

When asked why the Pyramid Scheme, Saunders says, "I have been working with the Pyramid Scheme since they opened and I cannot think of a better spot in the city to launch a night like this."

And one of the best parts of this special event is that Run This Shit will be an 18 years of age or older event so the music education of our region's newest adults can kick it old skool and that's real cool of the Scheme. Word.

(Editor's note: If you seek to add vinyl to your personal music collection, please considering visiting downtown Grand Rapids' Vertigo Music or Dodd's Record Shop on S. Division Avenue or traveling to Grandville's Corner Record Store. All locations are great places to secure an analog treasure.)
