Design Your Urban Garden Space: A How-To

Monday, Nov. 11, 6 - 8 p.m.
The concept of food justice is a phrase tossed around these days in many circles, from the foundation committee room to our neighborhood community centers to even our pubs.

But for many who may be scratching their heads or simply seek to know more about what exactly this concept means through the local lens, the Well House’s How To Design Your Urban Garden Space planning event is just the ticket to creating change in action.

On Monday night people are encouraged to attend and bring images or drawings of their home space so that staff members at the Well House can assist in helping them in plotting their next steps.

While at Well House, attendees will interact with gardeners on topics such as to how to maximize their urban space, no matter how big or small, to create an urban garden or city farm while enjoying a lively and yet very informative discussion around the topic of food justice in our city and the practical applications of its meaning to society.

“The Urban Garden Design Workshop is designed to provide people with concrete ideas and skills that will allow them to grow more of their own food in an urban setting,” says Well House’s Urban Gardener and Food Justice Educator Jeff Smith. “(Our) gardeners and food justice educators will … discuss ways in which urban food production is a necessary component of food justice, particularly in the marginalized communities that Well House works with.”

People who tend to the earth often are some of my closest mates in this world. They understand the importance of listening to the earth. When you combine this with Well House’s mission of compassionate care-based service to our community’s homeless, you create a space where something truly remarkable can take place and transform lives and our community.
