National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day: Pause, Give

Saturday, Dec. 21, 5 p.m.
A few week’s ago my G-Sync Editorial, Shining a Light on Fences, YouTube, and a Community with Grand Solutions, sought to address the topic of homelessness in our city in a humane, level and very honest manner.

Last week, Rapid Growth also launched And they all lived together in a little crooked house* - part one of a multi-part series of stories devoted to the topic by Do Good Editor Victoria Mullen.

And while it might seem odd that we have devoted so much word space in a publication charged to looking at the economics of our region, it is fitting that we remember or give pause from time to time that when things are looking rosy for one group, another might be suffering.

The Well House event is a part of the National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day held each year since 1990 on the shortest day (but the longest night) of the year and is a reminder of the tragedy of homelessness. Well House invites people to stop by, observe their newest housing unit, hear about their operation, and then stay to participate in a short 15-minute service to be held outside under the cold winter’s night sky as those who gather remember our homeless citizens and friends who have passed away this last year.

Also as an incentive to consider what you might be able to give this Saturday to the last 19:1 event this year, an anonymous donor will match every contribution that Well House receives on Saturday dollar for dollar.

In 2012 at least 157 cities in 40 states and the District of Columbia participated in this observation. People attending our local Well House event are encouraged to tweet images and reflective thoughts about The Well House Memorial Day event to #HomelessMemorial.

Admission:  Free. To read more about Well House 19:1, please visit their site.
