Invincible: From Israel to GRR via Detroit

Saturday, July 21, Lecture 5 PM (Pyramid Scheme Concert, 8 PM)
A G-SYNC FEATURED BEST BET EVENT

The success of any city is built upon an engaged citizenry.  One community organizer who hails from Israel but calls Detroit her home is coming to West Michigan and will unleash a plethora of stories of her community. But before taking the stage at The Pyramid Scheme, Invincible will be at the intimate Heartside Gallery to present an insightful and exciting lecture about her work and life in Detroit.

This is a great event for anyone who is seeking to find a way to connect their creativity with their community, but also for anyone who has ever been interested in the power of community organizing to really transform a region or our world.

Invincible, although born in Israel, calls Detroit her home and it is here where she learned a very valuable lesson at an early age that serves her well today: to look around and observe her surroundings.

Her observation skills became evident as she overcame her first hurdle: her inability to speak English. She taught herself our language using hip-hop as her guide before beginning to pen her own lyrics on paper at age nine.

Now a powerful force for change in the city of Detroit, she is owner of her own media label, EMERGENCE, and released her critically acclaimed debut album, ShapeShifters in 2008.

And while her latest hit, "Detroit Summer," continues to turn heads as people turn up the radio, it is accolades like TheTop13.com’s recent inclusion of Invincible at the number 5 spot on the list of the top female MCs ever that is really garnering her the attention she deserves. This list also included others like Jean Grae, MC Lyte, Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifah.

After her Heartside Gallery talk, fans are invited to join Invincible at The Pyramid Scheme’s 8 p.m. show with  performances by The Fist Coalition, B-Girls of Michigan, Sarge the Dame and dj K2Roc

Admission: Lecture - $2, suggested donation; Concert - $8.
