Formed: New works by Jenn Schaub (well, sort of…and one night only)

Friday, Nov. 6th, 6 - 9 p.m.
It is a rare opportunity to meet Jenn Schaub in her role as an exhibiting artist; far too often, she is quite busy being the guiding and steady hand behind so many events that have been presented over the years on this evolving city street. She is also credited as one of the first artists who helped shape the concept of the Avenue for the Arts. And while many of those folks have moved on to other projects in the years that have followed, Schaub, even after moving to purchase a home in East Hills, still continues to work the street via her position at Dwelling Place.

Friday night’s event at Craft House (across the street from Rockwell/Republic) is a chance to take part in the creation of Jenn’s latest work – work that is sure to have a few visitors scratching their heads questioning if it is art. Schaub, a trained printmaker and craftsperson, has recently begun to work with clay and as a result has radically redefined her creative process.

In a recent blog post, Schaub shares that nine months ago she decided to change her process…to get dirty with clay. And as she began to explore the popular theme many artists wrestle with, “why we make,” she discovered a quote by author Kenny Shopsin about why he cooks and it struck a cord with her:

“Cooking, for me, is a creative process, and I believe that people who are creative are creative for one of two reasons: Either they are going for truth and beauty, or they create as a way to dilute the venom produced by the subconscious minds. I cook for the second reason. When I cook, I am in a cathartic, recuperative process that calms me down and brings me from a neurotic state to a relaxed, functioning state.”

Guests are encouraged to RSVP because she is structuring the night as a place where an open exchange of conversation can commence while she is in the process of creating the works of Formed.
