Tommy Allen's 'Sexy Six' guide to LaughFest

Opening, Thursday, Mar. 10 - 20
It is hard to imagine that LaughFest 6 is already here. And in an attempt to help you cut through the fog of winter blues that are beginning to fade, I want to present, as requested by LaughFest’s Festival Director, Joanne Roehm, my LaughFest 2016 Sexy Six Days recommendations:

My LaughFest Sexy Six Days List:

First up: Thursday (Mar. 10) LaughFest — ever into kicking old record holders off their celebrated perches — returns at its community kickoff event with the challenge of hoping to win back our 2011 Guinness World Record title for "Largest Rubber Chicken Toss."

After the community kickoff, fans of all things free are invited to attend Not From Here/Crawlspace Eviction at Dog Story Theater (7 & 9:30 p.m.) or the Preview Show at the Pyramid Scheme (10 p.m.)

Friday night is a busy night in the city, but if you are not into huge crowds and are seeking a more thoughtful comedy experience, then visit The Real & Funny Side of Living with a Disability. The show will feature guest panelists who, if it is like last year, look at the humorous side of the realities one with a disability must face. The never-dull panel expands the boundaries of what comedy can be, proving there are no topics too out-there to tackle.

On Saturday, you will have a lot of good choices, but, as the emcee for Bridget Everett’s show at Wealthy Theatre, I must insist you join me here. But, be mindful that if you were part of the masses that left Margaret Cho’s very frank comic appearance in GR a few years ago, then give up your seat to someone else so that Bridget will have a more willing face to abuse. How Everett will abuse yours is totally up to this comic goddess who has appeared on Inside Amy Schumer, Girls, Sex and the City, Trainwreck, and the soon to be released Netflix series Lady Dynamite. No photos or video please.

Sunday is going to the dogs…literally, as People and Pets returns to the Grand Rapids Community College Fieldhouse. It is a good excuse to dress you and your pet up really sexy as you prance around the sweaty runners coming back from their underwear run. Later, after you take Fido home, be sure to stop by The B.O.B’s LaughFest Celebrity Lip Sync, where I will be your host for this clean comedy event. If you know me, then pray for me.

Monday, it is either comic education or the hanging with the gays. Or maybe both, as two hot redheads welcome you to their special events. First, there is Unleash Your Creativity with Teresa Thome, a two-time Emmy Award winning artist, who invites writers to join her for an evening of fun and creative writing with moments of improvisational outbursts. Afterwards, zip over to DeVos Performance Hall to see another two-time Emmy winner, Kathy Griffin. And while Ms. Griffin might be D-List to many, she is A Gold to her gays who are sure to be out, proud and definitely very loud at this event.

On Saturday (Mar. 19) The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’s Roy Wood Jr. will be at Wealthy Theatre to entertain the audience with his special brand of cross cultural comedy that is sure to raise spirits as well as eyebrows depending on where you fall on the comic spectrum. Remember this is a RRR event. (See LaughFest’s guide for what this means so that you are prepared.)

And you do not have to stop at six days of events as I have here because LaughFest runs until Sunday, March 20 and features more than 200 events.  If you do go to LaughFest, be sure to tag it with #SeriouslyFunny and #RapidGrowth so we can see how you get your laughter on this year.

Admission: Prices vary, but many are free
