Let’s Talk Music GR: Calling all musicians and those who love/hire/produce them

The joys of living in Grand Rapids are often boundless if you are on the receiving end of such gifts of entertainment. We do have a lot to offer this community. But for any artist within our community, you know that the process of creating in a rapidly advancing city means that at times we may struggle or need to step back and discuss the state of the music here.

Luckily for the musicians of our city, there is a new Meet-Up-styled group forming, Let’s Talk GR Music, and it will be one of the first times in a long time that musicians (as well as those who are wanting to join in the conversation) have sat down to discuss the diverse landscape of our local music scene.

While this may not be as much fun as watching a band perform at your favorite venue, this new group, which is hoping to meet on a regular basis as it moves forward, is seeking to probe into the questions of where we are as a community, why we do what we do, and how could we be doing it better.

After years of various arts writers asking these same questions, it is perfect timing for our music community to take inventory of what is happening and look at how, as a historical number of local recordings flood our market, we move our sound forward.

It is best to arrive with an open mind and listen to the diverse voices who have been invited to be a part of this event being held at the Wealthy Theatre Annex space.

I want to commend the organizers for indicating that they would be willing to welcome those under the ages of 21 to this event. Those that are under the typically 21+ or older crowd are often the voices we don’t hear. We need to hear from them, too. The future city belongs to all of us.
