Heavyweights of Metal: The Blood is Theatrical, the Talent is Raw Power

Friday, Jan. 11, 7 p.m.
No bats will be harmed, you won’t have to sign a pledge to Satan, and I am pretty certain I am not asking you to put your self or your mortal soul in danger by attending this event. But I am asking you to shake up your cozy comfort level this week by attending the 13th Annual Heavyweights of Metal at The Intersection.

“Metal in West Michigan is really something to see because it crosses over so many ages,” says Heavyweights of Metal and MLive writer John Serba. “And what is really great to see is the level of seriousness each of these acts apply to their bands as they put on their best in the hopes of getting your vote.”

And this is where it get interesting, because many of these acts will be bringing not only their A game to the stage as they shred their way to the top of the mosh pit, but also a host of fans who will prove, according to Serba, to be just as enthusiastic as the six different heavy metal bands competing each night of this three-week preliminary round of performances on Jan. 11, 18, and 26.

A full list of the acts performing is available on the Intersection’s website, but on Friday, Withhold the Blood, The Severed Process, As Empires Decay, Seraphim, Pass of Aggression, and Neqriem will be performing.

MoshPitNation’s founder and event sponsor Jen Lorenski says that in addition to the chance to see a rising metal act from our area code advance to larger markets, there will be contests like the ultimate shredder guitar with RIT Music and best tattoos judged by Forever Ink Tattoo.

It is not often one gets the chance to ingest this much metal without having to travel many miles, so do take advantage of this opportunity to discover something fresh and new. And lest you think heavy metal is just a bunch of big hair dudes aping about like any of the hair bands of the late '80s, then you have not witnessed how this music has splintered and evolved as it pulls and pushes into other genres.

There is one constant: black attire -- it never goes out of style, even with metalheads.

Admission: $5 in advance / $7 day of show
