A lot of people may say that after Governor Slick Rick cut the film incentives, the Michigan moviemaking business is dead.
However, as my inbox fills up with projects at various stages from "seeking funding" to "premiering soon," I am reminded by comedian Joe Anderson's reply to my inquiry more regarding his three picture project. He said "Good movies and movies that "need" to be made have always managed to get made -- incentives or not."
And while West Michigan has become a hot bed of film festival programming from Thriller Chiller (scary) to the Latin American Film Festival (Hispanic) to the Michigan Film Festival to the Waterfront Film Festival -- our international claim to fame --we have the chance on Thursday night to see a series of short films that have odd characters er…. creatures at their core.
This distinctly independent collection of films will unspool at the newly opened Pyramid Scheme, which continues to roll out in just over two weeks of operations some of the most ambitious and too hip to ignore programming.
Showing at the Creature Feature with be several short films including Notice, Dig Doug Friendly, Get Scared, Boyd's Body and Coyote, which features Joshua Burge (also known as the frontman Chance Jones).
Creature Feature is also premiering Broken Head Productions' latest short film, Spat, a zombie thriller shot in Grand Rapids, but based on the comic series, The Portland Underground.
Without giving too much away (because after all it is a thriller), an ex-boyfriend shows up at his former girlfriend's apartment only to get sick and piss off her current boyfriend, who unfortunately falls into a mortal situation.
After the films are finished, the band JuxTApose will provide musical entertainment.
Admission: $5.
