PlantPure Nation: Connecting healthy diets and healthy communities

Thursday, Nov. 5, 6 - 7 p.m. dinner/mixer, 7:15 p.m movie
It’s no secret headline that while Michigan sits comfortably nestled between some of the world’s most precious resources of farmland and fresh water, other states and nations do not enjoy this same vantage point.

In fact, I might be so bold to say that we take for granted our ease of access to fresh water and food. But maybe not for long, as a new documentary, PlantPure Nation, will showcase once again the need to consider the health benefits, ecological advantages, and economical solutions a plant-based diet can provide.

PlantPure Nation is from the production team of Forks Over Knives and includes director Nelson Campbell, producer John Corry, and writer Lee Fulkerson. (It is not a sequel.) In this film, peppered with familiar faces alongside a cast of politicians and agri-business leaders, director Nelson inserts himself into the narrative, hoping to discover the power of a plant-based diet and whether it could lead to significant and measurable health improvements in just 10 days.

Now before you roll your eyes back in your head, place them back here as I say: Nelson’s film shows us a pathway that, with a little creativity and will to try, is actually easier to follow and indefinitely sustainable for our region.

This event is presented by Vegan GR, our local source for all things vegan, who has invited Rebel Eats to partner in bringing this documentary to the big screen in our region. Like Vegan GR and Rebel Eats, both of whom are committed to the power of grassroots action, the documentary believes in showing folks how this is done by setting up PlantPure Pods in cities and towns to replicate the process.

So if you have been thinking that your diet needs a refresh once the new year hits — and it is coming soon — this event would provide a great stepping-off point for your waistline and your community. With your paid admission, you will be able to enjoy a meal prior to the film at a dinner event inside the Wave Room, with food provided by area restaurants (Love’s Ice Cream, Bit Baking Co., Malamiah Juice Bar, Marie Catrib's, and more) and prepared food using national brands like Daiya Foods and Field Roast. A cash bar is provided as well.
