She Rides Her Own Way: And hosts a fall color tour, too

Saturday, Oct. 24, 2 - 5 p.m.
It is mind-blowing when you hear the statistic about Millennium Park, but this Kent County urban parkland is so large, at more than 1,500 acres, that it’s not only one of the biggest in the nation, but it's twice the size of New York’s Central Park. And if you have ever visited New York in the autumn, then you know that New Yorkers love nothing more than to find any excuse to escape to the jewel of their city as the colors of red, yellow and orange usher in fresh and evolving views.

Here in Kent County, we often miss the chance to wander in a nearby park, as we often think that fall color tours are best left in the hands of northern enclaves like Traverse City, Midland, or the Tunnel of Trees on the way to Cross Village. But She Rides Her Own Way - a local female-friendly cycling group with a keen eye on fashion and style - wants to leverage the typically car-centric fall color tour experience as they present a special opportunity to enjoy a casual pedal through the rich in color Millennium Park.

Created by East Hills resident Johannah Jelks, She Rides Her Own Way is a campaign designed to build self-esteem and bring health awareness to women through biking.

Since it began a couple of years ago, She Rides Her Own Way has hosted events on and off the bike. The organization seeks to boost the self-esteem of the local female bike rider in a predominately male bike culture, thus increasing a healthy lifestyle through the environmentally sustainable act of riding one’s own bike…and doing it her way.
