Stroller Tour: Enjoying art at a new pace

Saturday, May 21, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Most museums are often places where commonly you can discover people shuffling around from artwork to artwork with arms clasped behind their backs as they quietly take in the view.

Some pause, some openly with gasp at the shock of the new, but, occasionally, like this Saturday at the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM), a few may even coo.

The reason?

On Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. the museum presents a special art viewing event devoted to exclusively to those young children in strollers, babybjorns, and/or held by hand as they take their first of a lifetime of steps.

The GRAM, always seeking to create unique experiences for the public, presents a specially docent guided tour where an emphasis on animals, colors, or shapes take center stage, allowing a parent or grandparent an opportunity to introduce their offspring to the joys of art.

And because the event is devoted to babies aged 0 to 18 months, no one will care if your children screams out loud at the sight of the Marilyn Monroe all decked out in Warhol’s best and brightest of colors.

After the tour, guests are encouraged to stick around and enjoy complimentary coffee, juice, fruit, and even some adult conversation with others in your group.

If you want to attend, please register in advance as soon as possible since space is limited. This is a great day to be at the museum since it is the closing weekend of the Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” exhibition and is also a chance to see the new “Honorable Ordinaries” by Michigan contemporary artist Maureen Nollette, as well as a special showcase of the GRAM’s “Modern Design” collection.

The tour is free with each paid admission and, as always, GRAM members are free as a benefit of membership. For more information, please go here.
