White Trash Blues Revival: No Cliches Allowed

Within the arts there are many wonderful moments that are produced through the mixing of media. This Friday the South Bend, Indiana act White Trash Blues Revival (WTBR) comes to the Westside of the city for a night that will not only push boundaries but also excite the imagination of music lovers.

On the surface, WTBR is a four-piece blues band made up of Joe Bent on skiddley-bow and vocals, Jeff ‘Ando’ Anderson on washtub, Brenn ‘Sausage Paw’ Beck and Pete Dio on percussion. But what they are able to do with these instruments is remarkable as they blend traditional blues with the very-hot, of-the-movement, lo-fi, indie rock technique with a real nod to the principals of punk.

For far too long, many blues acts I have watched have come off as acting the blues as they hop from their fancy cars to the stage and recite from rote memory what they feel the blues are about stylistically. It has been a crutch that we all fall for and is why WTBR is worthy of your attention.

They might still smell of whiskey (another cliché of the media), but their music is pure pleasure for the ears as they take the reins from others and hightail it into uncharted territory.

Sometimes they say the student must kill the teacher to ascend to the ranks of the master, and WTBR will be out in full force with their unconventional vocals and collection of jail-broken instruments creating a sound on the Westside that's unlike anything else you have heard in a while.

Opening for WTBR is Filthy Cur & Dead Eye Zack, who each contribute their own perspective on the mixing of genres ranging from jazz to ragtime to hip hop.
