Second Annual River City Water Festival: Hands-in and up for water education

Saturday, Mar. 12, 10 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The Second Annual River City Water Festival  is arriving at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and it is bigger and better than last year.

The first big addition is an extra day devoted to education and will be held on Friday, March 13.  And while normally this is a good thing to report, sadly, if you were hoping your school or class could join the registration, it has sold out already. The event organizers received more than 450 reservations with several hundred additional students seeking to attend. The organizers hope to add more space next year for this rapidly growing and very relevant event.

On Saturday, you are invited to bring the whole family to this community-focused museum event organized around the the celebration of our Grand River and how it is continuing to shape our city.

Many of last year’s favorite activities are back, but so are brand new, hands-on exhibition items, like an underwater robot and a rainstorm simulator. Plus, native plant exploration will be a part of the festival.

On Saturday at 10:30 a.m., the awards for the Water Superhero poster contest, which attracted more than 100 students from eight schools, will be handed out by Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and Grand Valley State University’s Dean of the College of Education John Shinsky.

The mission of this event is showcase to a new generation, as well as new residents, in our city how the river has helped shape our history.  The River City Water Festival also addresses the topics of stormwater, pollution, conservation and how they contribute in the health of our city’s waterway.

The River City Water Festival is organized through a partnership between Groundswell and the West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC). Financial support for the 2016 event is provided by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Grand Valley State University College of Education.
