Bust out for the environment: Wege speaker series is downtownerific

Friday, April 22, 11:30 a.m.
It is no secret to those who work closely with the environment that the path going forward has to be one where we are committed to achieving a critical balance.

On Friday, the Wege Lunch and Learn Speaker Series at the Grand Rapids Brewing Company will feature one person who is craving the critical balance needed between fossil fuel enthusiasts and the needs of the land: Crystal Lameman — Canada’s Intergovernmental Affairs and Industry Relations Treaty Coordinator and Communications Manager.

Lameman, a member of Canada’s Beaver Lake Cree, has evoked the indigenous rights protections to hunt and fish the land in perpetuity as outlined under the Canadian government’s Treaty 6.

But she has also been connected to a growing movement of folks in Canada who are beginning to better understand the connections between their personal and civic investments and those of the energy community that are creating havoc with the land on her homeland.

For Lameman, who is a mother with children, it is critically important to protect her ancestral land now. In stepping up now to protect the land of her people ensures that the life-sustaining power of their land continues to nourish long into the future for the generations to follow.

So, stop down at lunch and hear an inspiring story from a woman who is sure to inspire others concerned about crafting an environmental balance in our world.

Lameman will also be appearing at Aquinas College on Thursday, April 21, 4 to 5 p.m. at the Aquinas Performing Arts Center. A welcoming reception will follow her presentation. (Advance registration suggested for the evening event.)

Admission: Both events are free. Advanced registration is required for the evening event.
