11th Annual Winter Beer Festival: Keeping your drinking options alive

Friday, Feb. 26, 3pm to 7 p.m. (Enthusiast hour 2 p.m.)
A few years ago the organizers of the annual Winter Beer Festival had a huge problem on their hands. Having grown so popular meant that many hoping to attend braved the cold, hoping to score a ticket to the sold-out event.

Facing a capacity issue with no more room left on Saturday to grow, this popular festival devoted to Michigan’s ever-growing craft brew industry did the right thing and added a special Friday ticket.

So, while tickets to Saturday’s sold-out event can only be found on sites like Craigslist (and often at a huge premium), the addition of Friday to the event again this year means that you can still partake in the Michigan beer celebration.

Each paid admission gets you access to 100 Michigan breweries and brewpubs, and with your entry fee comes 15 tasting tokens that you can exchange for three-ounce samples of nearly 1000 uniquely Michigan craft beers. There are even some timed released or extremely rare beers — so expect to spend two tokens per three-ounce sample.

And no worries if you run out of sample tokens because you can purchase more.

Local bands keep you entertained, and, should you get a bit cold, the roaring fire pit will keep you warm. One note, while the venue serves food, it is recommended if you have distinct dietary needs that it is best to “weave” your food in the shape of a pretzel necklace. It seems to be the one way to smuggle in your food legally at this event.

If you plan to go to either event and do not have a designated driver, please consider carpooling with one or calling an Uber or taxi. Arrive alive.

Admission: Friday tickets are $45 in advance, $50 at gate (if available)
