Serendipity Media went national first, local second

West Michigan-based Serendipity Media has an interesting business model: start nationally, and then expand locally.

According the firm's founder, Kasie Smith, Serendipity Media will be celebrating their 10th anniversary in August by launching their first local product. "It is called West Michigan Woman," she says. "The website launched in January and the print version will launch in August. I had the idea for four years, but the timing was not right."

The publication will focus on issues that are important to career-minded women with an initial circulation targeting 10,000 women.

The media company, which started in August of 2002 with one magazine, now has six publications, eight newsletters and six websites -- all with a national focus. Serendipity recently added one part-time and two full-time members, plus contracted several local freelancers for content and other services.
