After enduring some of the highest air fares in the nation, travelers flying out of Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids are hoping for relief by the end of May when air travel competition heats up with the addition of services from two low-cost airlines and the expanded flight capabilities by two other carriers.

An overall long-term impact remains to be seen but, if history is any indication, the increased choice of airlines and flights will drive up demand for flights from Grand Rapids, creating more supply and lower prices.
"The market determines the price and, if there are more people demanding to come into some place, or demanding to leave some place, the prices come down," said Peggy Riley, a professional agent with Dolphin Vacations in Grand Rapids with more than 30 years in the industry.
