Seven artists land ArtPrize venues, hundreds more seek locations

As a community known for its participation in the arts, Grand Rapids may be appearing on the radar of artists worldwide due to the ArtPrize competition.  Matching artists with venues is underway, and hundreds of artists are in the wings, ready to negotiate for prime display space.

According to excerpts from the story:

Seven artists have secured venues in Grand Rapids to display their work in ArtPrize. "We've got hundreds of others waiting in the wings, waiting for venues," said Bill Holsinger-Robinson, president of Pomegranate Studios, which was hired to handle all development work for the contest. Rick DeVos hopes the event will increase Grand Rapids' appeal among young, creative people. Just 30 venues have signed up so far to participate on the unusual art competition opening Sept. 23, offering nearly $450,000 in total prize money. About 1,000 artists are in various stages of registering to participate in the world's most lucrative art competition with a top prize of $250,000. Matching artists with venues is under way, and ArtPrize leaders met Wednesday morning with prospective venue owners to hammer out the details of putting artists together with spaces within a 3-square-mile area of downtown Grand Rapids.
