The Ford Freeway (I-96) through downtown Grand Rapids to close April 12 for reconstruction

The Ford Freeway, the major east-west artery erected in the 1960s through downtown Grand Rapids, will close in both directions from the Grand River to Fuller Avenue beginning Monday, April 12 for a major $40 million reconstruction. Two lanes in each direction are expected to reopen in August.

According to excerpts from the story:

The project is paid for with federal stimulus funds, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It is expected to generate about 500 construction jobs through next November, when the job should finish.
