Textbook rental experiment at GRCC expands to other colleges

A textbook rental pilot program launched by a large Illinois-based bookstore provider last fall at Grand Rapids Community College is so successful, the company plans to expand the rental service to colleges nationwide.

The Follett Higher Education Group says it will allow textbooks to be rented at 850 bookstores nationwide, include those serving Eastern Michigan University.

According to excerpts from the story:

Under the plan, students were able to rent a new or used book for 42.5 percent of the retail price. The GRCC store typically buys back books for half the retail price. So a student could purchase a book for $100 and get $50 back — but only if the store is buying back that particular edition.
