Live/work studios are creative spaces for creative minds

No bedrooms, no paint on the walls, and artists galore. Affordable live/work units on Grand Rapids Avenue of the Arts have fired creativity where the artists live—in urban surroundings saturated with like minds.

Creating spaces where the arts community can live, work and play involves meeting commercial and residential codes, while at the same time creating spaces attractive to the much sought after Creative Class.

In many apartments, developers carve out a bedroom or two. Not so with the live/work units. Velasco advised Dwelling Place to leave it up to the tenants as to where they wanted their walls to be, Sturtevant said. That was somewhat hard to swallow for some Dwelling Place staff and federal officials overseeing some of the funding. “They weren’t used to not seeing bedrooms. We ended up with some movable partitions,” Sturtevant said.
