Muskegon County okays bid for $2M in stimulus funds for White Lake shoreline restoration

Identified as an "area of concern" due to the degradation of its natural shoreline, White Lake in Muskegon County is in need of a crucial restoration of shoreline habitat, wetlands and fish and wildlife – a project that could cost $2 million. Federal stimulus funding could cover the entire cost.

According to excerpts from the story:

Muskegon County commissioners have given the green light for conservation groups to pursue up to $2 million in federal stimulus funds for a shoreline restoration project for White Lake.

White and Muskegon lakes are classified as federal "areas of concern," which qualifies them for federal cleanup assistance.

Auch said the mission of the White Lake program is to restore habitat that has been lost through filling of near-shore areas through industrial uses over decades. Crews will remove large rocks that were installed during times of high waters to prevent shoreline erosion. Now, those rocks only get in the way of natural filtering of storm water runoff.
