Allegiant Air moves low cost air service from Lansing to Grand Rapids’ Ford International

A low-cost air service out of Grand Rapids has been a missing piece in the growth of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, but now a popular airline has agreed to move its low-cost services from Lansing to Grand Rapids.

According to excerpts from the story:

Allegiant Air, LLC will end its scheduled service from Capital Region International Airport in early 2009, ending a relationship begun in 2003 when the company initiated flights from Lansing to Las Vegas.

The carrier – Lansing’s second largest – said it is shifting its Michigan service from Lansing to Grand Rapids to distance the carrier from competitors at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Allegiant spokeswoman Tyri Squyres said.

"We believe this will allow us to serve a greater part of the state of Michigan, and at the same time move farther away from the competitive influences of Detroit," she said. "We are basically moving our operations over" to Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids.
