Among the offerings that attract young professionals to cities are a diverse cultural base and a feeling of belonging. One group in Greater Grand Rapids seized the opportunity to create a network that welcomes, and will hopefully help retain, young professionals of color.

GRAND RAPIDS — Many graduates think like Janean Brown did when she earned her degree from Grand Valley State University in 2005. A native of the metro Detroit region, she planned to move back east after finishing college and didn’t give much thought to staying in West Michigan.
But once she finished school, she found the job market better on the west side and eventually accepted a job offer that kept her in the region. Many of her acquaintances were in the same situation. While they knew one another, they didn’t really have connections within the community or the business sector.
"We wanted to get connected and learn more about the community," Brown told MiBiz. What they needed was a network.
