‘Grand Rapids’ comes up at national redevelopment conference

For a couple of days this week I'm attending Brownfields 2008, a national conference on brownfield redevelopment in Detroit.

Today the conference opened with a speech by William Strickland, chief executive of Manchester Bidwell Corp. and author of the book "Making the Impossible Possible."

Manchester Bidwell grew from an organization Strickland founded in 1968 to help inner-city residents of Pittsburgh learn skills needed to be successful.

"Environment drives behavior," he said. "You build world-class environments you get world-class behavior. You build prisons, you get prisoners."
