City income tax receipts shot up 9.6 percent in its last fiscal year thanks to stepped-up enforcement and an upturn in the local economy.
When Fiscal Director Scott Buhrer asked city commissioners for permission to hire another compliance officer last year, he estimated the position would generate about $3 in taxes for every dollar spent.
"I think we got double that amount," said Buhrer, who estimated enforcement and compliance efforts brought in an extra $1.6 million during the fiscal year ended June 30.
