A social and design experiment is underway in West Michigan. Twenty Grand Rapids families will create an instant urban neighborhood next fall by simultaneously moving into their new homes at Newberry Place, a “co-housing” or “intentional” community.
Ground was broken for the $4.2 million project on Nov. 13. Newberry Place is being built in the Belknap Lookout neighborhood of Grand Rapids on the corner of Newberry Street and Livingston Avenue, just north of Coit Park. It is specifically designed to encourage social interaction among residents and preserve land and resources by utilizing common spaces and moving parking to the perimeter of the community.
