The construction frenzy downtown has all the makings of a typical building boom -- cranes, trucks, guys in hard hats, traffic backups and fancy drawings of buildings that will change the skyline.
But among the highest profile projects, there's one symbol of American growth that's conspicuously rare: The steel girder.
In fact, four of the largest downtown projects -- Alticor's JW Marriott hotel, the Icon on Bond condominiums, the new Grand Rapids Art Museum and, soon, Robert Grooters' River House condo tower -- all-but lack the steel skeletons that are trademarks of buildings on the rise.
