As West Michigan’s design community continues to define design as an industry, the region’s design-based companies use ingenuity to successfully land new clients and projects in this uncertain economy. West Michigan is rich in small companies that design, develop or engineer products for companies ranging from component makers to OEMs. Although they may have customers around the globe in diverse sectors, even the design and development companies are feeling manufacturing's pain. It takes much more searching than even six months ago, but they're finding projects and customers.
"There are opportunities out there," said Jeff Disher, founder of Disher Design & Development in Zeeland. "I don't think anybody's immune from the economy. I think the key thing is getting creative in how do you approach your customers. How do you offer value in a creative way?
"We find customers who are strategically investing during this slow time. There are others who still want to have some flexible work force, which is another strategic approach. For us, it's been adapting to what's out there. Things have changed in the last six months."
