As clean energy manufacturing opportunities come under the economic spotlight, one West Michigan city develops new tax incentives to promote the industry. The boost is intended to help create and retain jobs.

KENTWOOD -- This summer, the process begins to transform manure from 1.3 million turkeys at Sietsema Farms at Howard City into energy to run Sietsema Farm Feeds. When fired up in August, it will be the world's first biomass-powered turbine engine designed to produce electricity.
And the research, design and manufacture of the system will be provided by Heat Transfer International, a Kentwood company formed three years ago, based on 30 years of experience. The old technology of waste-to-energy gasification is getting a fresh, new treatment in Kentwood, where officials established a Renewable Energy Renaissance Recovery Zone.
HTI is getting a 15-year break on taxes while expected to bring in about 90 new jobs over the next five years. City officials are convinced it's the start of something huge.
