Governor to create new energy department, names chief energy officer

After years of clamoring for someone in Lansing to lead the alternative energy crusade, proponents of renewable energy and green building may soon have a listening ear in legislative circles—or will they?

GRAND RAPIDS -- After struggling for years to develop wind power in Michigan, Rich VanderVeen hopes a new, consolidated state energy department will put some wind at his back.

"We are grateful to see things moving in the right direction," said VanderVeen, chairman of Lowell-based Mackinaw Power, which operates a pair of wind turbines in Mackinaw City. "It's been a long walk."

Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Monday announced she is creating an energy department and naming an energy czar to focus the state's efforts on renewable power and efficiency. The executive order will take effect Dec. 28 unless rejected by the state House and Senate.
