A Grand Haven angler's frustration over losing a fish while reeling it in was inspiration for a new product that keeps fish on the hook.
According to excerpts from the story:
Donald Kuhlman knows there's nothing more frustrating than hooking a fish, only to have it battle its way free from your hook. Not only does it frustrate the angler, but the stress on the fish can also be tremendous. So Kuhlman, who operates Action Tackle Products out of his Grand Haven Township home, set about coming up with a solution for lost fish. He came up with the Action Stoploss system, which is basically a thin wire that serves to make hooks weedless, but also holds the hook securely in place after it becomes imbedded in the fish's mouth. "I've been fishing for 50 years, and the biggest thing I've found, whether you're a young person or a professional, is to lose a fish," said Kuhlman, 59. "Obviously, it's just a hook and barb holding them on, and I thought there must be a better way to hold onto fish. "With this, once the fish depresses the spring down, the hook remains on their mouth under pressure, and they're pretty much locked on. That's why I call it the Stoploss."
