A video surveillance system will help the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety monitor several areas of city infrastructure. Life ring alarms and a video surveillance system on the south pier, both of which were installed earlier, will help the city detect life-threatening emergencies or accidents at the pier or the state park.

Grand Haven has won a Homeland Security grant for installing a surveillance system to monitor some of the city's critical infrastructure.
The $125,623 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be used to install a fiber optic video surveillance system to monitor the J.B. Sims Power Generating Plant on Harbor Island, the old diesel backup power plant on Harbor Drive, the Northwest Ottawa Water Filtration Plant, the U.S. 31 drawbridge and the Grand River channel. Each of these locations is considered "critical" to the area's day-to-day life, Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Director Dennis Edwards said.
