Philanthropists drive GRAM's green commitment

The attention to sustainable building practices was encouraged by Peter Wege, a major funder of the project.

According to excerpts from the story:

Peter Wege believed Grand Rapids and West Michigan deserved a new art museum and was eager to contribute to its construction. His one stipulation: it had to be green.

Wege donated a $23 million lead gift for the facility that is finally nearing completion in downtown Grand Rapids.

Wege, who insisted that the building be U.S. Green Building Council LEED certified, is unabashadely proud that it will be the first newly built art museum in the world with LEED silver or gold certification.
