During its
27-year history, Celebration has had two functions -- serve the city's
entertainment tastes and celebrate new developments.
Aside from
entertaining the masses, Celebration exists to commemorate structural
developments and other unique city features. This year, organizers have adopted
an "Education on the Grand" theme, reflecting a partnership with
Grand Rapids Public Schools.
One product
of the partnership is this year's poster design, created by 19-year-old Israel
Perez, a recent graduate of Union High School. Perez's painting -- an organic
pastel depicting the blue pedestrian bridge over the Grand River with fireworks in the background --
was selected from 15 student submissions.
