Construction could begin this summer on a $10.5 million expansion and renovation at Holland Hospital to increase its joint-replacement and neuro-surgery volumes, if the hospital gets necessary approvals, says Director of Surgical Services Kathy Shaneberger.

Space limitations in existing ORs (operating rooms), some of which are 20 or more years old, make it difficult to accommodate today's high-tech surgical equipment that has become standard, Shaneberger said. While the work won't add to the number of ORs in Holland, it 'will increase the surgical capacity of the hospital' through improved efficiency, states a certificate-of-need application Holland Hospital filed this month with the Michigan Department of Community Health.
