In an effort to spur business growth in a down economy, add over half a million dollars to income tax coffers and create some 200 jobs, Grand Rapids granted tax abatements to a dozen businesses looking to expand or relocate within the city.

GRAND RAPIDS -- The view from the Economic Development Office in City Hall's ninth floor is looking brighter these days.
Despite gloomy state and national economic forecasts, city commissioners this week approved six tax abatement requests that promise to bring nearly 200 jobs to the city.
The jobs range from the corporate relocation of a store-shelving company to the former Steelcase Inc. campus, to a California prenatal testing firm that will locate in the Medical Mile and a Southeast Side machine shop that will retrofit armored military vehicles and fuel controls for jet engines.
