They weren't sure it could be done, but with a lot of ingenuity, a bunch of expert welders, and five million pounds of concrete this cantilevered office building has raised the bar for construction in West Michigan. Frank Lloyd Wright would be proud.
According to excerpts from the story:
West Michigan has never seen a building like the new home of Lamar Construction Co. In fact, the only other one that comes close to it in the United States is the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock.
“The whole office hangs in mid-air. It is just dangling out there,” said Lamar Construction President and CEO Carl Blauwkamp.
Five million pounds of concrete serve as ballast in the base and the tower for the cantilever-office portion of the structure. The base is 100 feet in length, 50 feet wide and six feet thick. The concrete tower that connects the base to the cantilevered portion of the building has walls that are two feet thick.
