Cooperation among the members of the Michigan life science community will be needed if those companies are going to be able to compete on a global scale. That message was delivered by three speakers at the MichBio Life Science Conference and Expo that held in Grand Rapids Oct. 12. All three pointed to the West Michigan community as being a model for the kind of collaboration that will be needed.
Van Andel Institute Chairman and CEO David Van Andel used his keynote address to talk about what he sees as the renaissance of downtown Grand Rapids. He told the audience that "we have been at this for a while. There were times when I felt like a lone wolf and a voice alone in the wilderness pushing this along."
But the effort has been worth it. He said that no other industry in Michigan has grown as dramatically as have the life sciences.
