The U.S. Mint selected Grand Rapids, MI and three other cities across the country as urban centers with populations young enough and cool enough to push what the Mint touts as a hip coin-style version of the dollar bill. Expect the coin to appear soon in a change purse near you.

This trend-setting Hill Country city is one of four communities nationwide that will heavily promote the new $1 coin, a gold-colored alternative to the dollar bill that the government hopes will save money on, well, money.
The coins have been in circulation throughout the country, but few people
use them or even see them.
Austin joins Portland, Ore., Charlotte, N.C., and Grand Rapids, Mich. – all known for their younger population and cool reputation – in the push for the hip new version of the tired old dollar bill that's cooler, edgier and better looking.
